Leopoldina María Elena was born in 1914.  Leopoldina María Elena's father was Alberto León Frías Nin and her mother was María Elena Guillermina Crispina Bunge Chas.  Her paternal grandparents were Emiliano Domingo Frías Avila and Leopoldina Nin Reyes. She had three brothers and a sister, named Alberto Ramón Cayetano, Luis Alberto, Eugenio Julián Alberto and Marta Susana Elena.  She was the fourth oldest of the five children.  She died at the age of 82 in 1996.
