José María was born in 1873.  José María's father was Estanislao Frías Molina and his mother was Eloisa Piñeyro García.  His paternal grandfather was Félix Ignacio Frías Araujo and his paternal grandmother is Luisa Maria Molina López. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Francisco José, Eduardo Esteban, Estanislao, José Félix, Carlos José, Leopoldo, Ricardo, María Elena, María Catalina and María Eloisa.  He was the youngest of the eleven children.
