María Catalina was born in 1863.  María Catalina's father was Estanislao Frías Molina and her mother was Eloisa Piñeyro García.  Her paternal grandfather was Félix Ignacio Frías Araujo and her paternal grandmother is Luisa Maria Molina López. She had eight brothers and two sisters, named Francisco José, Eduardo Esteban, Estanislao, José Félix, Carlos José, Leopoldo, Ricardo, José María, María Elena and María Eloisa.  She was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
